CHAPTER SEVEN

THEY HAD STOPPED in front of a double storefront whose white facade was decorated with large columns. The sign over the front door swung in the breeze. Clumps of snow partially obscured the letters, but Jamie could make out the word Bath.

“You took me to a bathhouse?” Every ounce of her pleasant mood threated to vanish as she pictured soaking up steam while surrounded by an abundance of towel-wrapped men, only one of which was built like Whit. “That’s not an adventure. That’s...”

“Not a bathhouse,” Whit replied. “It’s a Roman bath spa. Here, take a look.”

On his phone, Whit had called up the spa’s website. Jamie read the home page, which promised customers’ tensions would “melt away” as they relaxed “in one of the spa’s seven mineral pools inspired by the famed baths of the Roman empire.”

“It’s like sitting in a hot tub, only bigger and with better water. A session in one of these and all those bumps and bruises you got from skating will fade away.”

Reading the description, Jamie had to admit, it sounded tempting. She had envied the snow monkeys sitting in their hot tub. But after last night’s fantasies, did she really want to sit in warm, steaming water while Whit and his bare torso sat on the other side?

“I don’t have a bathing suit,” she pointed out.

“Not a problem. I called ahead and explained. They’re setting aside a couple suits from the gift shop for us.”

Of course he did.

“Look,” he continued. “I thought a soak would be good for my back and that you might appreciate soaking your aching muscles too, but not if it’s going to make you feel awkward. I’ll have Lars take you back to the hotel.”

“You don’t have to,” Jamie said. She was being silly. The baths were at least eight or nine feet long. How was soaking in one in a bathing suit any different from sitting in a hotel hot tub? “It looks like fun.”

If she was having trouble controlling her attraction to him, that was her problem, not his.

“Do you need a different size suit?” The woman on the other side of the dressing room door had a voice as smooth as silk. Soft like silk too. Exactly the kind of voice you’d want to hear in a spa. Jamie wondered if that was a prerequisite for the job.

By contrast, her own voice sounded loud. “No thank you,” she said. “This one fits.”

Someone, either Whit or the woman with the lovely voice, did a good job of selecting the size. The plain black suit was neither sexy nor overly modest. There was a small V in the front and a plunging back.

The spa itself was nothing like she’d imagined, although given she’d imagined a stereotypical bathhouse sauna, that wasn’t too hard. Everything was soft and soothing as the spa associate’s voice. Hints of lavender and salt infused the air, mingling with the low sounds of ambient music. When Jamie stepped out of the dressing room, it was into a softly lit locker room with vanity mirrors and heated floors.
